File geometry shapes the production route
Overall size, wall design, fine features, enclosed areas, overhangs, supports, orientation, and the number of separate parts can change machine time, material use, handling, and the number of units that fit into a production cycle. A quote should begin from the actual file rather than a product category alone.
Machine time is not the same as material weight
Two parts that use a similar amount of material can require very different production time. Layer height, movement, supports, cooling, orientation, and part arrangement all affect how capacity is used, so weight by itself is not a dependable bulk-price shortcut.
Material and finish affect more than the spool price
PLA, PETG, ABS, and ASA have different production considerations, and finish or color expectations can add review, handling, support removal, or post-processing work. Explain the intended use so the starting material and finish can be reviewed with the geometry.
Quantity changes routing and commitment
A 10-unit pilot, 100-unit launch run, and larger repeat batch may use the same file but require different capacity, staging, quality, packing, and inventory decisions. Quantity can improve production efficiency, but it can also magnify an unresolved revision or packout problem.
Quality requirements add real work
Fit checks, assembly checks, appearance review, included-item confirmation, sorting, labeling, and documentation take time. Define only the checks the product needs and distinguish them from preferences so quotes can be compared on the same acceptance scope.
Packing and shipment belong in the estimate
Protective materials, labels, inserts, hardware, bundling, carton organization, multiple destinations, and fulfillment handoff can change labor and shipping assumptions. Scope the sellable or receivable unit before accepting a price that covers production only.
Lead time depends on the reviewed job
Geometry, quantity, material, finish, queue, quality work, packing, and shipment all influence timing. Provide the required delivery window, but wait for confirmation before making a customer-facing promise.
Compare quotes with a controlled input set
Use the same file revision, units, quantity, material, finish, quality requirements, packing, destination, and required window for every quote. Ask what is included and list open decisions. A lower number is not a better comparison if it silently excludes support removal, assembly, packing, or delivery work.
